The Har-Mack-Smith Foundation (HMSF) was founded in 2382 on Hub by a group of people which included holovid maker Richard Harbringer, physicist Dr. Rebekah Makas, and Yuri Smithson, the popular billionaire philanthropist. The central idea of the organization was that wealthy individuals could come together, enjoy themselves, and use some of their wealth to aid those who were less fortunate.
The official mascot of the foundation is the platypus; “Party with the Platypus” is the tagline used in most invitation to HMSF events. The official story on the mascot is that the platypus is constructed from the best parts of several different animals combined. This fusion of superior traits is the stated motivation of the foundation. Harbringer often says “The parties bring the best people together, and that brings the money in. It is almost like fooling people into becoming charitable.”
The foundation is become well-known throughout the colonized worlds. They have established medical trust funds which pay for the treatment of underprivileged children. Several thousand people are alive today as a result of the medical trust funds. Many corporations, governments, and independent traders have donated time, fuel, or simply cargo space to these efforts.
Membership in the foundation is expensive and prestigous, and includes famous politicians, sports & holovid stars and corporate presidents.
The foundation is famous for the parties they throw as well. These are often wild and raucous affairs and attract the wealthy and famous. These parties are often thrown using the personal funds of foundation members. The entrance fees are used by the foundation to fund their charitable efforts..These parties often attract wealthy non-members who want the opportunity to rub elbos with the wealthiest and most powerful members of the Clement Sector.
Membership in the HMSF costs 750,000 credits per year. This sum does not include party entrance fees, which are often in the 10,000 – 25,000 range.
