Famous Dead Pirate
The most famous pirate of the colonization period was Colin Drake. He had started his career as a member of the United States Space Navy, but deserted the force once on the Clement side of The Conduit.
Colin joined a group of pirates as a gunner, but after a particularly heavy firefight ended up the captain of the ship. As time passed, Colin was able to gather other ships to his cause. By 2280, Colin commanded an entire fleet of armed merchants.
Colin’s most famous raid was against the Egata Mining vessel MV Disco Volante in 2282. Egata had armed their ore carrier and placed a group of armed troops on board as well. Colin and his compatriots overpowered the troops and captured the vessel as well. The ship became Colin’s flagship The Shadow. It was in this vessel in 2287 that he and his small fleet were destroyed by the British ship HMS Endeavour, in the Nyx system (Clement, Franklin 0610).
Today, Colin is a larger than life, Robin Hood character. Legends persist that he stashed the majority of his wealth somewhere before the battle with the HMS Endeavor. There are frequent rumors the treasure has been “discovered”. Others say he made contact with an alien species, and that the British destroyed him to keep their existence hidden.
Colin and his crew are the star of countless holovids (very loosely) based loosely on their lives and exploits. Perennial fan favorites include the “Singing Engineer” Scott and the lovesick gunner Okumura (who dies during a space battle while trying to rescue her lover); both are utter fictions. The most famous series is Superpirate! which cast Brigitta (Poppy) von Brandt as a gender-swapped Nicole Drake. This role made her a sector-wide star.
